This week I had a class with one of my Japanese female students: her name is Sachi. Sachi is one of my favorite students and also one of my longest and loyal students. She plans to relocate to Canada in March 2019 because her husband works there now. To transition more smoothly into the Canadian society and working environment, we have been preparing for her Native English Journey by incorporating Business English Skills and Conversation Speaking Skills her Native Private English lessons.
Sachi works in the Japanese finance industry and to prepare for her her Native English Journey in Canada, we have been using my book called `How to Transition from Your Current Job to your Teaching Job.` Although this workbook is geared towards teachers getting new jobs, it can also be used to locate non-teaching positions. By using this workbook, we have rewritten her CV, by using eye-catching English phrases, and her Cover Letter, by describing why she is applying to certain positions. In terms of locating jobs in Canada, we have been using the Canadian Indeed website.
The last class that we had class, when we were preparing to apply to different positions, on Indeed, Sachi told me that she did not want to apply for jobs yet. I was taken aback because she had already informed me that Canada is very expensive and she needed to work to help support her husband. Therefore, she needed to get a job. Nonetheless, she does have a young child and child care in Canada is very expensive: it can range from around $1,200 per month This is one of the reasons why she wants to work there. Since she will be going there in March of 2019, I thought that she wanted to already have a job so that she could begin working immediately. Now, she does not want to work in March but wants to wait until September 2019, which is nine months from now.
So, the reason I'm writing this blog post is to encourage Private English Teachers to have a clear idea about your Private English Students` English journeys.
It is important to understand exactly what your students` goals are, and it is equally important to re-evaluate if their goals have changed. The reason being is that you do not want to be on a different timeline or path from your student because then you do not want to create a curriculum and lessons plans that are not geared towards your Private English Students` lesson outcomes. You also do not want to prepare lessons and teaching materials (early in the timeline) if your student will not need them until the end of the timeline.
In terms of Sachi`s lessons, I now have to redirect my lesson plan and update my curriculum to focus on Daily Native English Conversation Skills instead of Business Skills. So guys have you ever had a student change their lesson goals outcomes without telling you? If so, what did you do?
